Head Over Heels for the Erin Condren Take Note Notebooks

April 18, 2015

erin condren take note notebook deluxe simple unboxing review

They are here!!! My Deluxe and Simple Erin Condren Take Note Notebooks (whew, mouthful) have finally arrived and they are adorable. So of course what else would I do but film an unboxing and review of the two beauties for y’all? I’m super pumped about this one too because I actually used a real camera to film it all. That’s right – no more creepy vibrating background. Just pure, HD up in my faceness. You’re all so lucky! As usual you can either click play below and/or read through the post which will feature pretty pictures and comparisons of the deluxe and simple Erin Condren Take Note Notebooks!

erin condren notebook unboxing review

The new EC notebooks are (thankfully) lower priced than I remember and this year they offered different sizes as well: 8.5×11 and the standard 7×9. However, not wanting to tote around something huge, I went with the 7×9 for both of my notebooks. You have the option of adding a calendar to the deluxe for an additional $15 (ouuuuch) which I went ahead and splurged on because I plan to use it as a blog/content/business notebook and figured the calendar will help with my editorial calendar organization. I plan to use the simple to use as a family notebook, hence the Clementines cover because we’re a band duh, however I’m having a massive block in how to get it set up. Any helpful hints are appreciated!

erin condren notebook unboxing review

So far the notebooks are just great. They have the same paper/quality that the Erin Condren Life Planners do and I love the note paper, just as I do in my planner! Any designs printed on the paper are gorgeous and bright so it’s a real treat to look at. The paper is thick enough to handle some heavier pens without bleed such as the PaperMate Flair, Staedtler Triplus Fineliner, or Pilot G2 0.7mm, but not too bumpy that you can’t use something as thin as the ever-amazing Pilot Coleto. Most of the paper in the deluxe and simple is lined but there is some unlined paper in the back, and of course if you get a calendar in the deluxe that starts it all off!

erin condren notebook unboxing review

The months in the Deluxe are very cute but it’s a bit annoying to have to hand place all of the Colorful Dots that are included for dates. I understand why it’s not dated but it’s still a pain in the arthritis! I half considered using tweezers to place them before I gave up and just placed the first and last day of the month. I do love the little saying on the front of each month – it’s quite similar to the sayings at the top of the months in the planner.

erin condren notebook unboxing review

Above you can see a thickness comparison between the simple and deluxe notebooks to the 18 month Life Planner (that does not have the last 6 month’s weeks in it). While the deluxe comes close to the planner, it falls just a bit short. The deluxe does come with the “keep it together folder” and a clear pocket in the back which had been removed before I took this photo though, so that probably helps a bit with the overall bigness :) On the other hand the simple is about half the thickness of the planner – I just love how it feels in my hands!

I reeeeally love these notebooks. The quality is amazing and so much nicer than the spiral notebooks that you can pick up at the store. Which they should be of course! The great thing about how many pages these have is that they should last you for quite a while. Erin Condren does offer dividers now to separate the sections like a multi-subject notebook, however when I placed my order I didn’t think about getting any and I’m very happy I didn’t. At the time I didn’t realize that the dividers are basically the same size as the 7×9 interchangeable covers with slight tweaks to the design on the back. So basically you can just use your extra covers as dividers! It’s also kind of a deal since if you purchase one interchangeable cover you get a front and back cover, basically giving you two “dividers” for $10.95! You can see what it looks like in the video above :)

I’m super excited to dive in and start using these beauties! Have y’all gotten any of the new Erin Condren Take Note Notebooks yet? Any tips on using them family style or even for blog content?

Wishing you DIY divider hacks to help save your pennies,

Shantelle

March Highlights

April 4, 2015

So apparently when you make a March Madness bracket you’re supposed to actually try and understand who you’re picking for what. Amusingly enough I’ve lost almost every single round with the exception of one pick…which is in the final four! I guess I’m just really skilled at randomly picking the winner based on teams I dislike. In not so exciting news though, with April comes the allergy demons! The poor dude has a war waging in his sinuses thanks to the weather being as indecisive as when I’m trying to decide where to eat when I’m already hungry. Now, let’s check out the real highlights from March 😉

The Month

→ March passed in quite a little blur, didn’t it? While we got a lot done, I don’t think I got to do a lot. Mostly there was studying for midterms, very long papers, and a yard sale that took a LOT of prep – but it was quite successful! We purged quite a bit at the sale but still ended up heading to Goodwill with the entirety of our back seat and trunk packed up for donation. :)

Erin Condren Notebooks keep it simple deluxe viva espana island fleur

→ The newest line of Erin Condren Notebooks came out!!! I was way too flippin’ excited once launch day came around. Since I’ve never gotten one before, I ended up with both the Simple (in island fleur, above right) & Deluxe (in viva españa, above left) in 7×9″, and they should be shipping any day now! Expect an unboxing and review once they arrive. Let’s hope these cuties tide me over until the 2015/2016 Erin Condren Life Planners release in June this year! Also, there’s a 40% off sale for the 2015 planners right now & if you want to save $10 off your first order you can sign up through my referral link! Yay savings :)

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

→ Date night has been incredibly budget-friendly since we found out about Regal’s Value Day at our local theatre! The haps (at least at our theatre): tickets are $6/person ALL DAY. ALL DAY! Plus, if you’re a Regal Crown Club member your ticket is $5 and you also get crazy awesome deals for concessions. Like, how could we not take advantage of that? The cherry on top has to be the basically empty theatre since it’s on a Tuesday, and who goes to see movies on a Tuesday? …Other than us.

Processed with VSCOcam with kk1 preset

→ I didn’t get a chance to shoot with my “real” camera all month *insert smallest violin overture here*. April will definitely be changing that though! I’ve got Explorations to do 😉 I’ve also finally been making use of the scrapbook book Andrew got me years ago. I basically just throw all the random bits of mementos into it so they’re not so spread out anymore. I’m like, the best minimalist ever.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

→ Mani is really freaking cute y’all. He hasn’t grown out of it yet!

The Articles

• I love these tips for stocking up on “real” foods!

• I’m only crying a little over this great post at Imagineering Disney of Walt at Disneyland. PS – you should follow ID. Amazingness will ensue.

• When can we all visit this amazingly interactive museum? They encourage interacting with the pieces and taking selfies!!

• I adore my beautiful Nikon, but this post on mirrorless cameras for travel photography has me wanting to make a big purchase other than the Sigma Art 35mm 1.4.

• The title might sound like clickbait but this post on Energy in a Spoon was spot ON. The dude & I have started adding two spoonfuls of this mix to our morning smoothies and we really do stay fuller longer and get an energy burst. I may do a post on it someday but until then, explore!

• If you wanna be super cool and watch how Walt Disney Pictures’ logo has changed throughout the years, click!

• I need to actually try this wooden spoon DIY. Andrew inheirited some spoons from his mom when he first moved out of his parents and we still use them today because wooden spoons are the best. ever. However, they’re not all that cute as-is.

• This message from the past is inspiring. I totally want to leave behind something like this.

• I really want to be a runner (or at least a jogger) and this piece reenforced that for some reason. I need to get back out there!

Did anything exciting happen in your March?

Wishing you inspiring messages,

Shantelle

It’s Been 84 Years…

March 17, 2015

I’m alive! Or at least, what my dude likes to refer to as “whatever your existential definition of being alive is”. I thought I’d do a mini recap post of what I’ve been up to in our time apart. And believe me, dear readers, I’ve missed looking at y’alls nonexistent faces 😉 It has been a crazy few weeks and so much has happened so let’s get to it!

IMG_2104

Biggest news: We’re going to Disneyland in October!! I am deep in the throes of planning our trip down to the minutest detail. We’re also planning on doing an anniversary shoot while we’re there so if anyone has a recommendation for Disneyland photogs let me know! I’ve got a few feelers out so I’m excited to see who we end up shooting with.

2015-03-17_0001

2nd biggest news: I’m finally a ginger! I’ve wanted to be a redhead since basically forever (mainly fueled by the beauty that is Dana Scully) and I’m super duper happy to be one now. I may even go a little brighter at my next visit to the salon :) My dude even took that photo on the left – he’s slowly working on getting better with a camera. You don’t want to see the other 50 shots he tried!

SMP_1631

• Master Manolo Gracey Panda XVI is getting huge! We’ve been taking him on walks more often which he loves and hates, poor dear.

2015-03-17_0002

• I finally upgraded my laptop to the Pro with Retina and wowie. What a gorgeously detailed screen it is! It has twice the ram my old pro had and fifty times the pretty. As much as that level of detail isn’t always noticeable, I do find myself marveling a little over how crisp photos can look on it. I also adore how light it is in comparison! Andrew made the decision to keep my old pro and switch out the ram so he’s finally a full-on Apple user! Now I’ve got to live with the tech dork that keeps saying he has to go get his “Macbook Pro” though rather than laptop. Gear snob 😉 But hey, at least now we both have the cutest decals for our laptops ever.

2015-03-17_0003

• We saw Cinderella. Like a lot. Look for a review on that Saturday!

SMP_1881

The dude and my phone. Because who doesn’t need to see a super tall guy with a Minnie Mouse case once in a while?

• The last month or so has been so stressful that I fell off the wagon a bit with my exercising and diet, but who doesn’t from time to time? I’ve made a commitment to really focus on this and start integrating exercise more into my daily routine. We’ve started walking Mani on the daily and I found the Blogilates beginner calendar which I’m going to start on Thursday! It looks very challenging but hey, I wanna feel better and I need to look extra cute for our shoot in October 😉

2015-03-17_0005

• Our walks have been super fun, and really freaking pretty. So nice I had to mention them twice.

• I found some new amazing pens to use with my Erin Condren Life Planner. I was also so happy to receive a survey to complete on the 2015-2016 planners – I’m crossing my fingers for a smaller version! Not too much longer now!

That wraps up the first post back for me. Real talk: if you’ve stuck around to keep reading now that I’m back I really appreciate it. I was feeling burned out, creatively non-existent, and all around depressed and the time away really has helped me feel so much more refreshed. I was able to do some thinkin’ and I’ve really started to look in a new direction for the blog and my business. Blogging and photographing will continue but it will be changing…slowly. And as always, I invite y’all to contribute with what you like, what you don’t, and what you would!

I hope y’all have had a great few weeks! Did anyone else have awesomeness happen?

Wishing you gingers and Disneyland,

Shantelle

PS – I love Titanic.

Tips & Review from 6 Months with the Erin Condren Life Planner

January 17, 2015

**Check out my 2015-2016 Erin Condren Life Planner Unboxing + Overview!**

erin condren life planner review tips pros cons recommendations

Has it already been 6 months since the scary time of constantly checking my order status and subsequent plunge into obsession with the Erin Condren Life Planner happened? Goodness, time flies! Since I tried (and failed) to do monthly updates on my planner I thought I’d provide a review after having used the Life Planner now for 6 months. Although we’ve had our ups and downs, overall the Erin Condren Life Planner has been pretty awesome. To make it easy, I’ll be doing Pros/Cons/Recommendations on the planner (because what planner-obsessed person doesn’t love a good pro/con list?). Hopefully this will help with any indecision you might have with purchasing one, or your own! Read on or click to listen/watch for more info!

erin condren life planner review tips pros cons recommendations

PROS

1. Holy cuteness, Batman. If you’ve been frustrated with the simplicity of Moleskine or other planners, EC has you covered. I’ve not grown tired of the colors and patterns and if I wanted a different cover it was no problem to switch for a different one or you can order one online.

2. Space!!! I love my Moleskines, always have and always will, but there is something to be said for the massive amount of space that ECLP offers you. Like I can list an entire to do list in one square almost!

3. Notes on notes on notes. So not only is there crazy space in the weekly sections, there is also about 25 pages after the planning section with blank and lined pages for any notes you’d need!

4. Stickers. I HAVE A REASON TO BUY STICKERS AGAIN!

5. Durable. This thing has help up so well! I haven’t taken it around with me every single day but I’ve used it at home consistently and it’s still just gorgeous.

erin condren life planner review tips pros cons recommendations

CONS

1. Price. Yeah, for a planner this size and the quality of products used to make it, it’s not that bad of a price. However considering the fact that in order to purchase a single cover you’d pay almost the same amount in shipping as you would for the cover, I’m not all that into purchasing extras. And while their notebooks are just darling, there is no way I’ll be dropping $42 on a spiral bound notebook.

2. Quality control(ish) issues. I had a great experience with Erin Condren’s customer service team, but it was also because what possibly should have been caught in production wasn’t. However, it enabled me to do a giveaway back in July so it wasn’t ALL bad!

3. Size. The downside of having SO much space is having to make a larger planner. True it’s not terribly large (7″x9″) and I don’t usually need it if I’m using my running errands crossbody (a small Michael Kors Margo in Cinnabar, which doesn’t seem to exist on the internet anymore!), but it would be nice to have the option to bring it with. I’ve been trying to use both the ECLP and Moleskine since 2015 started but…it’s hard at best.

4. WTF do I do with it? If you don’t need to separate your day into Morning/Day/Night, chances are you might have some problems figuring out exactly how to use the weekly and monthly layouts. I’d love to say I figured it out right away, but 6 months in I’m still trying to figure out what to put in here/how to organize this thing. And believe me, that is very frustrating for someone with OCD/planner issues.

erin condren life planner review tips pros cons recommendations

Recommendations

We made it through pros & cons! Now let’s look at some recommendations after working with this cutie for 6 months.

1. Do NOT buy everything you think you’ll need at once. I’m so ashamed – y’all have seen part of the huge stash of goodies I bought when I ordered my Life Planner because according to the FB groups, I “needed” them. Oh my. If only I could turn back time. I bought so many pens (don’t regret), post-its (kind of regret), stickers (ok, don’t regret that either even if I haven’t used many of them yet), and washi tape (oh do I ever regret this) that I could have started a small Hobby Lobby.

2. Don’t use the Erin Condren stickers. Yes, they’re removable this year. No, that doesn’t make them good. Do yourself a favor and purchase the Avery Removable stickers (this is similar to what I purchased) if you’ll be using stickers for things like birthdays, vacations, doctor appointments, whatever. I used mine to make cute stickers for each Monday.

3. Get yourself some nice pens. I personally love the Staedtler Triplus Fineliner
and the Pilot G2 0.7 (for everything). Another, slightly pricier, option is the awesome Pilot Coleto! You can have multiple inks in the same barrel and there are so many cute options for the barrel as well. Downside: the ink tends to run out pretty quickly. My personal barrels: Mint Green and Pink.

4. Do not buy “all of the washi”. Just please, save yourself the heartache of the cuteness that you may rarely use. And the space.

5. Give yourself the excuse to buy stickers. Because come on, we all love stickers.

6. Get the 18 month. I ordered the 18 month planner (only an additional $5) and instead of leaving the bulk of the weeks in there since I’d just be ordering another in June, I ripped out the weeks and glued the months together. This allows me to still plan ahead (which we often need to do towards the end of a planner) and not have too much wasted space.

7. Don’t use the same layout for every month right away. When you’re first testing out any planner don’t just put in the first layout you think is cute (i.e. putting your total miles ran in the monthly/daily section for every month when you don’t even know if you can/should run…Shantelle). Give yourself time to adjust to the planner and let your inner planning goddess open up to you. 😉

All that said, planners are like people and you either love ’em or want to love ’em. I do adore my Erin Condren Life Planner, and as of now I think I will get another once June rolls around with the 2015-2016 planners, but I’m still trying to work out the kinks 6 months in. Whereas with my 12 month Moleskine I just plop it all in and don’t (totally) worry about making it cutesy, with the amount of people that pour an extreme amount of creativity into theirs I’ve had issues of planner envy/inferiority. I tend to put my creativity into other venues but if you’ve got comparison issues they could pop up here! However, once you start getting inspiration from those people’s planners and stop feeling crappy about your own, your life will improve by leaps and bounds. And let’s be real, that goes for every aspect of life and not just planners :)

What do you think? Do you have any favorite planners or tips?

Wishing you stickers and a little less washi,

Shantelle

Life Planner Overview & Vlog!

July 26, 2014

I am FINALLY here with an overview of my life planner! I’ve been using her consistently since June 30th and I am smitten. I went a little overkill with decorating the first week or two, but I think I’m finally to a point where I can keep up with the decorating!

I did say I would change the “Work Hard Play Hard” pages and I am SO happy with how they came out. I actually covered up the words with cute things from a Cinderella Sticker Set (I got mine from Hallmark but this is the only link I could find) which is supposed to actually hold the stickers but…I’m a rebel? I just stuck some double sided tape on the back and it’s held up perfectly!

erin condren life planner

I’m still trying to figure out the monthly view but I’m not totally unhappy with it. I stopped using the star stickers for working out in the monthly (and lately in weekly, oops) because it felt very cluttered. I let myself use a blog/vlog sticker once it’s posted (I got these from krissyannedesigns and I need to order more)! I’m using the Emily Ley flags to mark birthdays as I really don’t like the EC labels at all. The flags aren’t removable but these are birthdays…they don’t tend to change.

erin condren life planner

The first week was a little rough:

erin condren life planner

I tried having a running “Get It Done” list on the left column of the week and I have to say, I don’t like it. I felt like my days were super empty and then I would consistently forget to do some of the tasks until the last minute. I also had my physical therapy exercises in the days and again…that definitely didn’t work. I also had my cleaning tasks on little sticky flags so I could move them around if needed – that I actually liked! I did move them around but actually ended up still getting the tasks done. I also started the week with a cute/inspirational sticker that I made using Avery full sticky sheets and printing stickers from the Erin Condren facebook groups. It was a LOT of work but I’m really pleased with it and have continued it. This week I left out some stuff and even left some stuff in that didn’t happen! It was a little odd having space to really write out what we had going on in the day since I was so used to the Filofax.

The later weeks were much better:

erin condren life plannererin condren life planner

I fell into a good spot with the left column that I’ve been keeping up! General important note for the week on top, work hours, some general thing I need to do, and then a quote that I liked that week. You can see I also kept trying to like the Martha Stewart Tear Drops but I just can’t get into them. Maybe I’ll find something to use them for at some point but proooobably not. I also covered up my work address and co-worker’s phone number so try not to use X-Ray vision or something on my cupcake post-it 😉 This was the week I started really thinking about posting twice a week and I was worried I wouldn’t have enough posts. I DO, Y’ALL! I was going to set a date to start it but a few weeks ago I just happened to post twice in the same week so I just kept it up! You can also see that I threaten myself quite often in my planner. I also tend not to listen to my own threats because WHAT AM I GOING TO DO ABOUT IT, HUH?

If you want to see a full overview of my planner for the last few weeks (and see some of the extra pages in motion) check out the vlog!

I am in love with some of the stickers I got, along with some of the smaller details that I can put into a planner of this size, it’s AWESOME.

erin condren life plannererin condren life planner

I’ve been using the sleepy owl stickies to mark cancelled appointments (when I remember) and then the awake owl for mini reminders (I love owls oh my goodness). Then the cutest elephants ever are reminders for movies Andrew & I want to see.

erin condren life planner

This is probably my pride & joy. I wanted a way to keep up with trip needs/reservations so I decided to use some of the journaling 3×4 cards and turn them into movable records! I just washi’d them into the pages and I’ve even moved it a few times without any damages to the page/washi/card. It’s super handy even though I already have everything stored in my Kayak account too.

I’ve really enjoyed using this planner so much – even more than my Filofax just because of the space and color. Now, how are you all keeping creative?

Wishing you washi more colorful than Holi,

Shantelle

me and the dude

Hi There!

I'm Shantelle and that's my guy, Andrew! I love colors and he's colorblind. We write about a lot of stuff, I take photos, and then we go to Disney.
