While I love being here in Asheville (or Disney, or like, anywhere), we do eventually have to go back home to Raleigh. That being said, I thought I’d ease back into real life with a post about a favorite place that isn’t too far from home: the American Tobacco Campus in Durham, NC. The first time I stepped foot onto the American Tobacco Campus in 2012 was brief and I didn’t even realize that there was more than a few bricks in front of the Bulls Stadium. Fortunately, my ignorance only lasted until my next (more purposeful) visit for an engagement shoot back in May. From that moment on I was hooked.
From the entrance next to the parking garage to the exit (depending on where you leave) you really won’t have a chance to stop looking at all the pretty. The American Tobacco Campus is packed to the brim with gorgeous details, brick work, statues, and even market lights that make the campus’ feel totally change at night.
Dining options abound around the campus but Tyler’s Taproom and their Carolina Nachos have my heart. There doesn’t seem to be a bad seat in the house and the campus’ brick runs through the interior. But most importantly, yum. yum. YUM. I’m pretty sure anything on their menu makes the perfect complement to a night out!
Among the gorgeously sophisticated landscaping there are awesome sculptures such as this dinosaur(?). How cute would a family/kid-focused shoot be with this little rascal? (I’m not sure why this dino is a rascal, but roll with it).
I feel that every single stairway at the campus (along with all of the super neat stonework) make for PERFECT couple shoots. Who doesn’t love cuddling up to their “honey” once in a while?
Here are two examples of shots at the campus. On the left is Andrew, aka The Dude, from earlier this month after the styled shoot when we went for more Carolina Nachos (because I might have another addiction). I often drag him with me to scout locations and he ends up with a new headshot for free, so it’s not all bad. The area he’s in is right behind Cuban Revolution at a wooden table that never seems to be occupied. It’s one of my favorite spots at the campus! On the right is the ever adorable Kalien & Matthew from the aforementioned engagement shoot. This was taken underneath the Full Frame Theatre sign (see the previous photo on the right) which not only gives you super fun lighting, but the market lights reflect onto the windows behind it – how can you resist??
Ending a night out at the American Tobacco Campus is absolutely wonderful, with the market lights (sorry I’m not sorry about how much I’m obsessed with them) and gorgeous fire pits, how could you not find yourself a little in love with the campus? I always find myself wishing for another visit even if we’ve only just arrived. What nearby places do you love visiting?
Wishing you fire pits, nachos, and maybe market lights,
