For a very long while I’ve been obsessed with theme parks. We recently visited Tweetsie Railroad out in Blowing Rock, NC for my fiancé’s birthday (post coming up soon) and we’re very big lovers of Disney as well, obviously.
Today I found a post which mentions the Land of Oz, located in North Carolina. Now, me being the insane person I am, I saw the state I lived in mentioned, abandoned theme park, and immediately hopped on my research train. I found this place is out in Beech Mountain (only around 3-4 hours drive from us), they do annual “resurrection” weekends, and you can RENT DOROTHY’S HOUSE. I’m not a huge Wizard of Oz fan, but this is certainly intriguing from any point of view.
Looking around the page I found that you can indeed have singular experiences there without breaking and entering. You can have a private party, tours, or even a wedding there – and the prices aren’t even that bad. Visit their Parties at Oz page to find out more. Honestly, after talking to my guy we’re kind of wishing we’d known about this. How cool would it be to get married for around $400 in Oz??
The “resurrection” festival they throw each year, Autumn at Oz, seems to mainly happen in October and they bring the park back to life. If you explore the festival’s page you can see they have actors and tours for the place and it’s really not that expensive. While I’m sure it’s exciting to visit this place alone and under the radar, it has to be even better to experience it with other people who are sharing the same fascination. A park brought back to life for only two days out of the year, although at only a fraction of what it once was (there has been a LOT of reports of even whole houses stolen from the park). And besides, wouldn’t the experience be even better if you could bring home one of these fancy t-shirts?
